What is Competition Kite Flying?

Sport kite competitions can be for individuals, pairs or teams of three or more. Most competitions take the following form:

  • Precision: This is where the competitors show off their skill and control. There are compulsory figures which the judges have prescribed before the event followed by a freestyle routine which is scored on technical content, execution and creativity.
  • Ballet: In this section the competitors fly a routine to music which they have chosen. Marks are awarded for technical content and for the choreography or the artistic interpretation of the music.

Local competitions, usually in the winter, are organised on leagues basis for individuals. These competitions concentrate on the compulsory figures. The leagues are the sports breeding ground. They are where individuals hone their skills and progress from Novice to Master. They are also where pairs and teams are formed for the forthcoming summers National Championships.

Keep an eye on the notice board of your local kite shop for news of your local winter leagues. You could also keep an eye on the Newsgroup news:rec.kites which is also a good source of information for future festivals and general comment.

The organising body for competative kite fly in UK is STACK (Sport Team and Competative Kiting). They have a web site at http://www.netspaces.com
