World Cup '99 off!

It has recently been announced that World Cup '99 has been abandon. This event which would have been it's 10th incarnation was apparently to have taken place in Columbia.

No official reasons have been given but it is believed that a number of potential contestants had indicated that they would not be available. The following was taken from the UK Governments advice to travellers and maybe supports peoples fears.

"Violence and kidnapping are serious problems in urban Colombia and all foreign nationals are a potential target. In rural areas there is a risk of being caught up in guerilla or paramilitary attacks or opportunistic kidnapping; three US citizens were recently kidnapped and killed (4 March)."

It is a shame to loose this prestigious annual event and it can only be hoped that someone can get it back on its feet again next year.

STACK, AKA and JASKA are proposing a World Championship it is believed that this will be a bi-annual event. The inugarial Championships are to be held in Malaysia in February 2000. Details can be found at http://www.
